How Much Does Product Rendering Cost?

Understand product rendering cost factors, how modelling and image production are estimated, and what to include when requesting a reliable quote.

By Kimagination ·

Product rendering is usually estimated from two connected scopes: preparing the reusable product asset and producing the final images or films.

That distinction explains why a simple-looking image can require substantial work, while a larger set of approved catalogue angles may be relatively efficient. The image count matters, but it is not the complete pricing model.

The reusable asset cost

Before a product can be art directed, it needs a reliable digital foundation.

Source geometry

Clean CAD can reduce modelling time, but CAD is not automatically render-ready. The studio still needs to inspect scale, surfaces, assembly structure, internal detail and product configuration.

When CAD is unavailable, modelling may begin from drawings, dimensions, prototypes or reference photography. The estimate should make this modelling scope visible.

Geometric complexity

Complexity is not simply object size. A small mechanical product can contain more modelling work than a large piece of furniture.

Cost increases with:

  • Many unique components
  • Fine manufactured detail
  • Soft forms that require careful surface quality
  • Internal parts needed for cutaways
  • Moving mechanisms
  • Fabric, cable or flexible geometry
  • Incomplete or contradictory references

Materials and artwork

A simple matte polymer is faster to establish than layered glass, liquid, iridescent coating or complex translucent material.

Packaging adds label preparation, print finishes, embossing, foil, clear windows and market-specific variants. Original vector artwork reduces guesswork.

The image-production cost

Once the product is approved, each deliverable still needs composition, lighting and finishing.

View type

A neutral e-commerce angle can reuse a standard camera and lighting system. A campaign hero image may need a unique set, props, simulation and extensive art direction.

Environment

Studio backgrounds are usually more efficient than detailed interiors, landscapes or large custom sets. Existing environment assets help only when they match the approved visual direction.

Simulation and effects

Liquids, particles, cloth, smoke, complex motion and product interaction introduce setup, iteration and render time.

Number of variants

A colour change can be efficient when geometry and artwork remain the same. A different cap, label, component or package may require new asset work and individual approval.

Resolution and formats

Large-format print, close crops and animation require more detail and render resources than small web images. Tell the studio the actual channel rather than requesting maximum resolution by default.

Why image count can be misleading

Ten catalogue views of one approved asset may share:

  • Product model
  • Materials
  • Lighting
  • Background
  • Camera system
  • Retouching approach

One campaign image may require a custom environment, fluid simulation, several compositing passes and repeated art-direction reviews.

A useful estimate therefore groups deliverables by production method instead of applying one flat image price to everything.

What revisions affect price?

Revision scope should distinguish corrections from changes.

A correction brings the work into line with supplied information. A change introduces a new product version, camera, environment, label or direction after approval.

Agree:

  • Number of review stages
  • Who consolidates feedback
  • What is approved at each stage
  • How new scope is quoted
  • Whether late product changes affect all deliverables

Staged approval protects the budget. Geometry should be approved before final lighting; the master look should be approved before producing every variant.

How schedule affects the estimate

A compressed schedule may require parallel production, additional artists or higher render capacity. It also reduces the time available to resolve missing information.

The most efficient timeline includes time for client review. A studio cannot progress safely when approvals arrive later than planned but the final delivery date remains fixed.

What should a quote include?

A clear estimate should identify:

  1. Modelling or CAD preparation
  2. Number of master products
  3. Materials and artwork setup
  4. Number and type of images
  5. Variants and colourways
  6. Environment or set production
  7. Animation or simulation
  8. Review stages
  9. Final sizes and formats
  10. Delivery schedule
  11. Asset reuse or future extension
  12. Any excluded assumptions

This makes different quotes easier to compare. One estimate may include a reusable asset and broad usage while another covers only final flattened images.

How to request a reliable quote

Send:

  • Available CAD, drawings or reference images
  • Product dimensions
  • Material and finish references
  • Current label and packaging artwork
  • Image list or rough shot list
  • Required variants
  • Intended channels
  • Resolution and aspect ratios
  • Visual references
  • Deadline and review stakeholders

If some information is unavailable, state that directly. The studio can price discovery or model preparation rather than hiding uncertainty inside the final image rate.

How to control cost without weakening the work

Prioritise one strong master direction. Reuse the approved product, lighting and set across compatible outputs. Separate essential launch deliverables from later extensions. Consolidate feedback and approve each production stage before the next one expands.

The goal is not the largest image list. It is a visual system that covers the real campaign and can grow without rebuilding its foundation.
