3D configurator planning worksheet

Turn a list of product options into a buildable configurator scope: allowed combinations, commercial data, visual assets and acceptance checks.

Map the product logic

  • List options and values, then define valid combinations rather than assuming every combination can be sold.
  • Record dependencies, exclusions, defaults, unavailable states and market-specific restrictions.
  • Give each orderable result a stable identifier. Decide which system owns price, stock and SKU data.

Scope the visual system

  • Separate geometry changes from material, colour, label and accessory changes.
  • Identify which details must be readable in the default camera and which need a close-up.
  • Prepare a product model, representative material samples and a list of asset ownership/licensing constraints.

Design the complete customer path

  • Describe selection, reset, share/save, add-to-cart and quote-request behaviour.
  • Include a non-3D alternative, keyboard operation, readable option labels and useful loading/error states.
  • Agree supported devices, a low-end test device, loading budgets and an image fallback if WebGL is unavailable.

Write acceptance cases

  • Test one valid and one invalid combination for each dependency rule.
  • Verify displayed configuration, saved/shared state and cart payload agree on option IDs and price source.
  • Name the person responsible for future product updates and document how a new option enters the system.
