CAD-to-CGI handoff checklist

Prepare engineering geometry for marketing without losing the details that make the product accurate. Use it before sending a model for quotation.

Identify the source of truth

  • Record product revision, export date, units and the assembly configuration to be shown.
  • Include a known overall dimension so scale can be checked after import.
  • Flag differences between the CAD model, production sample and packaging artwork. Do not ask a visualisation team to silently resolve engineering decisions.

Keep the assembly intelligible

  • Use useful part names and preserve an assembly hierarchy where possible.
  • Identify visible components, internal components needed for an exploded view, and internals that can be excluded.
  • Label repeated parts, variant-specific parts and approved open/closed states.

Specify surfaces and appearance

  • Provide material and finish references, including roughness, coatings, translucency and important manufacturing marks.
  • Send label artwork, logo files and print dimensions separately from the geometry.
  • Highlight surfaces that must remain dimensionally exact and areas where a visual simplification can be proposed.

Validate a small transfer first

  • Agree the export format with the receiving studio; include the native format/version in the handoff note.
  • Ask for neutral product views to check scale, seams, missing faces, normals and critical proportions before final lighting.
  • Agree file access, NDA, retention and redistribution limits before uploading confidential engineering data.
